Do We Understand God the Same Way?

I am a Catholic, therefore, you can assume correctly that I do believe in the divinity we often call God. I am sure that the god you think does not exist is also not the god I worship.

Some basic understandings about whom I call God.

The Name:

God is our word for him. Jesus never used the term addressing His Father. He used Abba or Father. God did not give himself the name of God, humans gave that name to Him. So understand that God is a human term for an entity that is above the human which we call a divinity or a god. The name He gave Himself is I Am Whom Am or Yahweh.

God is not who many famous atheists say He is. This is a common understanding in those who reject His existence. Bill Maher criticized Barack Obama for believing in an invisible friend. Others call him the old man in the sky. These are incorrect understandings of God.

The best description of God I know of is this one — God is. It really highlights all we know about God. God is the source of all being is another common understanding. He is the source of all goodness, truth and wisdom.

Our God is both imminent and transcendent
