You return home from a road trip. Telling of your adventures, you mention that while driving from Florida to Maine, you discovered there is no self-service in the state of New Jersey. Well into New England you pulled off the main road just outside of Boston to refuel. Driving intothe first gas station you see, you learn pumping your gas is not permitted. So, you decide to go to another one and again the same thing. Finally, you discover that as in New Jersey, this one New England town has no self-service gas.

Your friend to whom you related this whole story says, “Oh you were in Weymouth, Massachusetts.”

New Jersey, Oregon, Weymouth

Two states in the USA outlaw self-service gas stations, New Jersey and parts of Oregon, there is another town on Long Island in New York as well. One other place is a spot just outside of Boston.

Weymouth boasts that it is both the home of Abigail Adams, the nation’s second first lady and the burial place of Thomas Watson who received the world’s first telephone call from Alexander Graham Bell. Now you can add the only town in New England where you are unable to pump your own gas to the list of unique qualities of the town. It is also where I grew up and graduated from Weymouth North High School.
