Thanks Michael for your comments. The numbered issues above are actually Cardinal-designate McElroy's, not mine.

I do understand laudato Si to be focused on a spirituality as a response to the effects of unbridled materialism. That is not always understood.
I do see the Eucharist issue much in the way I wrote in my previous piece. We need to respond in the way that leads us to understand what we are receiving.

However I also see it in the ways of the weeds in the wheat. I learned that parable speaks volumes for any form of ministry. We may take strong measures that may on the surface appear appropriate but they may cause unseen collateral damage that will outweigh the positive effects of the measures we took. I think that is my own archbishop's position—Cardinal O'Malley. He does not allow us to deny anyone communion who approaches us in church. It seems to be the pope's position too.
